He graduated from the University of Missouri-Rolla with honors in 1973 and began his career with the Missouri State Highway and Transportation Department, where he formed many close friendships.

David had a passion for motorcycles and racing Corvettes, spending many weekends at the track and winning numerous trophies. Later in life, he returned to his love of horses, breeding foundation quarter horses at KD Ranch and enjoying trail rides on his favorite horse, Buddy, especially in the mountains of Westcliffe, Colorado.

David is survived by his loving wife Karen, daughters Stephanie Thomas and Bethanie (Matt) Kennicott, grandsons Michael and Cooper, and sister Rosemary Hancock, along with nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louie and Fannie Erwin.
