James Monroe Hammons, 96, of Bois D'Arc, passed away, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, March 14, 2017.

James the son of Leroy T. and Mildred (Stockard) Hammons, was born in Springfield, MO, on September, 20, 1920.  James married Wilma Maxine on February 20, 1943, they enjoyed 56 years together before Wilma's passing in 2000.

James faithfully served his country, in the Army, during WWII.  He was part of the 25 ^th and 33 ^rd Infantry Division and was part of the Pacific Theater.  James was stationed in the Philippines when Japan surrendered and was part of the occupational forces that secured the islands.  Recently, James had the privilege to take part in the Honor Flight of the Ozarks.

James graduated from Bois D'Arc in 1939, which was the first class to graduate from Bois D'Arc.  He enjoyed being outdoors.  James enjoyed gardening, canning, and cutting wood.  He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

James was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two sons, James Leroy Hammons, Terry Hammons; and a granddaughter, Sherry Stokes.

James is survived by his children, Marilyn Smith, of Willard, Evelyn Elliott and husband Mike, Tony Hammons, all of Ash Grove; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and many friends.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 3:00PM-5:00PM in the Wilson-Griffin Funeral Home, Ash Grove, MO.  Funeral services will be Monday, March 20, 2017 at 2:00PM, in the funeral home chapel.  Burial will follow in White Chapel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to Honor Flight of the Ozark and may be left at the funeral home.
