Obituary

Shirley J. Hicks-Tummons, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. Shirley 68, of Taft, Texas, formally of Walnut Grove, Missouri, passed away October 8, 2020. She was born on March 17, 1952 in Walnut Grove, Missouri to Cecil and Rosa (Yocum) Hicks. On June 12, 1967 Shirley and Leslie Tummons were united in marriage. They shared over 53 wonderful years together.

Shirley and Les grew up in the Walnut Grove community and went to Assembly of God. They have known each other as youngsters and fell in love at a young age.  Shirley spent 25 years in the military with Les, supporting him through every new duty station and times they had to be apart. She was the one person everyone went to for guidance, support, and counseling. Shirley often had to fill both parent roles, when special assignments took Les to places that families were not allowed to go. Shirley had a love for sewing and making quilts. She achieved her dream of owning her own business "Ninnies Creations." Making things for family was her greatest joy. Family was her whole world. Shirley pioneered the first optune treatment device for patience with glioblastoma. She helped open up the treatment for patients in South Texas. Her medical treatment doctors and staff called her "The Amazing Lady."

Shirley is survived by her husband Les Tummons; children, Angela Barker (Kevin), Mike Tummons, Brandie Tummons, Austin Tummons; grandchildren, Matt and Sandra Barker, Michael, Joseph, Hannah, Leslie, Patrick, Tait Tummons, Madison Ellis, Abigail West, Christopher King; great grandchildren, Hazel and Kourtney Barker; siblings, Mary Eaves, Larry Hicks (Fran), Patsy Thompson (Troy), Rosalee Jones (Ronnie), Randy Hicks (Rhonda), Ricky Hicks (Kathie); countless nieces and nephews, other family and many friends.

Shirley is preceded in death by parents, Cecil and Rosa Hicks; brothers, Dale and Lawrence Hicks; and sister, Joann Parnell.
