Obituary

Sylvia Delores (Dixon) McDowell, of Mansfield, Missouri, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025, at the age of 84. She was born on February 18, 1941, at Mill Creek by Peck Ranch, to the late David Allan and Elsie Mae Norris Dixon.

Sylvia and James Earl McDowell met as teenagers and shared 67 years of love, including 63 years of marriage following their wedding on April 6, 1962, in Van Buren, Missouri. Some of their fondest early memories were spent together at the river, as well as going to movies at the drive-in and theater — enjoying simple moments that would stay with them for a lifetime. In 1967, Sylvia and James gave their hearts to the Lord during a revival in Fremont, a moment that would guide them throughout their lives.

Sylvia worked at a cap factory and spent much of her life caring for children, dedicating herself to babysitting and nurturing others as if they were her own. She had a deep passion for the outdoors — tending to her garden, canning vegetables, planting flowers, and working in her yard brought her great joy. Her famous pumpkin pie was a favorite treat that always made family gatherings extra special. Known lovingly as "Nannie" or "Nan," she was the heart of her family, creating a home filled with warmth, love, and comfort for all who entered. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering love that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Sylvia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her loving husband, Earl McDowell; her children, Ronda Kelley (John), Brian McDowell (Stacy), and David McDowell; her sister, Freida Douglas; her treasured grandchildren, Michelle Thompson (Chris), Drew Kelley, Caleb McDowell (Bethany), Kenna McDowell, and Journy Kelley; her adored great-grandchildren, Colton Ward, Ansley Thompson, Casen Thompson, Bea McDowell, Bristol McDowell, Caeden McDowell, Kylynn (Briley) King, Jake Thompson, and Harison Thompson; and her great-great-grandson, Thomas King.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Virginia Lansche, Esco Dixon, Marie Alley, Evelyn Smith, Beulah Cleaver, George Dixon, Everett "Mick" Dixon, and infant brother Eldon Dixon; her son-in-law Shane Kelley; her father-in-law Milford McDowell; her mother-in-law Lilly McDowell; and brothers-in-law Wayne McDowell and Laine McDowell.
