Virginia "Kay"
Spiva
November 6, 1940 – November 7, 2023
Virginia Kay Spiva was born in Fordland, Missouri to Steve and Pansy Lea Mack on November 6, 1940, and passed away on November 7, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, her four brothers Gene, Donnie, Dean and Jim Mack, her sister Shirley Scott and grandson, Jacob Kellogg.
Kay graduated from Fordland High School third in her class and attended college at Missouri State University. With an inherently strong work ethic that she passed on to her children, she first began her career at Farmers Insurance where she worked as a secretary and then with a private law firm. But it was with the Federal Public Defender's Office where she achieved her greatest professional success. She began as a secretary in the Springfield office. But when she retired, 27 years later, she was the Chief Administrative Officer for both Springfield and Kansas City Office where, among other things, she was responsible for creating and administering the entire budget for both offices. Everyone that knew Kay understood this fundamental truth – she loved being in charge and would lead with both competence and compassion – as those in her church would attest.
Kay's church families were very important to her. She was saved during a revival while in the 5th grade and was baptized in the Fox Ford River. She was a member of the Fordland Baptist Church for 20 years and then for 27 years with Second Baptist Church in Springfield. She sang in the choir and taught Sunday School in the Youth Department and then for the Mary Martha Women's Group. When she moved to Walnut Grove, she became a member of Eudora Baptist Church where she started and published the weekly newsletter, volunteered as a Sunday School teacher and organized a yearly Youth Sunday and graduating Senior breakfasts.
Kay was a single mom for several years before she met the love of her life, Win Spiva. They married in 1985 and enjoyed a wonderful life together living first in Nixa before settling in Walnut Grove. He has lovingly cared for Kay throughout her health struggles with Parkinson's and will miss her greatly.
Kay is survived by her children and their families: Kim Cook (Dave) and their sons Cole and Bret, Steve Kellogg (Deatrice) and their sons Alex and Zachary, Greg Kellogg (Stephanie) and their sons, Pierson (Mallory), Drew and Mitchell. She was also blessed with a great granddaughter Maya in September. Her role as Memaw was one of her greatest passions. She always set aside time for each grandson and made them feel special. They all loved coming to her house where she would spoil them with special meals, trips to the Ozark Empire Fair and birthday scavenger hunts. She was also "Momma Kay" to her second daughter, Terianne Love.
She is also survived by Win's family who she loved as her own, including Win's son Keith Spiva (Julia and daughter Madison); Keith's children Ashlyn Klingensmith (Natha), Ethan Spiva (Sophie) and their children Millie, Wyatt and Alex Spiva; Win's daughter LeAnn Spiva Hopfinger (Mike) and their children Joseph Hopfinger (Dineke) and twin sons Barrett, Koen and baby Letti and son Daniel Hopfinger; Win's sister, Evelyn Haun of Monett, MO and daughter in law Kara Spiva. In the Spiva family she was lovingly known as "Nana" and established many traditions with the kids and grandchildren.
Kay was a favorite aunt to all of her nieces and nephews as well. Since her passing, her children have received countless messages from those who were lucky enough to cross paths with Kay. The common theme to all of these condolences is the positive impact she had on them and how lucky they are to have known her. Kay was an extraordinary woman, humble in her demeanor yet passionate for her family and friends. She will be missed by all.
